What They Don’t Tell You About Growing Up

No one tells you how loud the silence gets.
How you’ll sit in a room filled with your own things
and wonder if any of them still belong to you.
No one tells you how small home starts to feel
when the people who made it home are gone.
How the radio plays the same songs,
but you no longer hum along.
How the streets are still there,
but they don’t take you anywhere you want to go.
No one tells you that one day,
you’ll look in the mirror
and see someone who looks like your mother,
but doesn’t know where to find her.
