Somewhere in the desert,
a girl is standing barefoot on the side of the road,
wind whipping through her dress,
waiting for a ride that isn’t coming.
She’s got a purse full of nothing,
a heart full of ghosts,
a name that doesn’t quite feel like hers.
The highway shakes beneath her feet,
black ribbon stretching into forever.
She wonders if she’ll get lost in its darkness.
She closes her eyes,
tilts her head to the sky,
and prays to a God
who stopped listening
a long, long time ago.
