Rip the photos. Burn the letters. Hurl it all into the wind and never look at the ashes again. Cut your hair. Dye it wildfire red. Get a tattoo you’ll regret. Kiss a stranger at 2 a.m. and pretend to fall in love again. Realize you’re not. You won’t be able to love again for a long time. Cry until your eyes are puffy moons. Let it all pour out. Call your mom to tell her you love her. Dance until your legs feel numb and sob until your heart does too. Scream-sing to sad songs. Write. Write until your hands begin to bleed, until the skin peels off and all is left is the pencil. Move to Paris or Prague or some far-flung city at the edge of the world. Get out of the house. Get drunk. Get messy. Make a scene. Sleep in late. Wander streets you’ve never walked and forget how it felt to hold their hand. Laugh louder than you ever did with them. Do all the things you once forbade yourself from doing. Run until your lungs turn to fire. Lie still until the world spins like a carousel. Forgive them. Or don’t. Forgive yourself. Always. Buy flowers just for you. Eat cake for breakfast. Learn how to be alone without feeling lonely. Start over. Again. And again. And again.
