Evelyn Waugh

Life & Background:

Born in 1903 in London, Waugh was educated at Oxford and began as a satirical novelist before converting to Catholicism in 1930. His worldview darkened over time, especially after serving in World War II. A staunch critic of modernity, he embraced traditional values and forms, both stylistically and politically.

Inspirations:

His work reflects Catholic theology, English aristocracy, classicism, and a bitter view of postwar decline. Influenced by G.K. Chesterton and Edwardian literature.

Themes in His Work:

  • The moral decay of modern society

  • Nostalgia for lost aristocratic order

  • Satirical exposure of hypocrisy and vanity

  • Religious salvation and spiritual failure

  • War as absurd, dehumanizing, and tragic
